Earlier this year, a BBC film titled "LS Lowry: The Unheard Tapes" gave viewers an intimate glimpse into the artist's mind through rediscovered interviews. These conversations, lip-synced by Sir Ian McKellen, revealed a tender and revealing side to Lowry that many had never seen.
McKellen himself has been a vocal advocate for Lowry's work, criticizing the Tate for not giving the artist the attention he deserved. However, a 2013 exhibition at Tate Britain featuring 90 of Lowry's works helped to shed light on his industrial scenes.

Spira acknowledges that while Lowry's industrial scenes are iconic, they can sometimes lead to a "negative caricature" of his entire body of work.
